The science curriculum encompasses all areas of physical, earth, and life science. All areas of science are approached via the scientific method, and Socratic questioning is also used as appropriate. Our science teaching emphasizes observation, experimentation, and discovery rather than the typical dull memorization of facts.

There is a strong emphasis on outdoor science education using the 3 ½ acre conservation area adjacent to Wayland Academy. This wonderful outdoor laboratory has beautiful woodlands and fields and includes trails for our science teacher to take students on frequent observations of the flora and fauna. Frequently, the children collect samples and bring them back to the classroom for closer observation under the microscope.

In addition, the science and other subject curricula at Wayland Academy follow closely the guidelines proposed by the former Secretary of Education William J. Bennett in the "James Madison Elementary Schools Model Curriculum," published in 1987. We also follow closely "The Core Knowledge Series of a Good Grade 1-6 Education," edited by E.D. Hirsch Jr. and published by Dell Publishers in 1993.
