Transition
We understand that moving from Primary to Secondary school can feel challenging and, at times, worrying for some pupils. At Wayland, we take this transition process seriously and have developed a structured approach to ensure every child feels supported and prepared.
Our Transition Process
The process is divided into several stages:
Spring Half Term 2
Parents and carers will be asked to complete an online questionnaire and data collection form via the Applicaa platform. Login details are sent directly to parents/carers using the information provided on the initial school application forms submitted to NCC. Completing this form enables families to share essential information with us, including key contact details and personal data.
Summer Half Term 1
To ensure a smooth transition, Wayland staff meet with feeder schools to discuss individual pupil needs, including strategies for supporting SEND pupils. These meetings typically involve our Assistant Principal, SENCO, and Safeguarding Manager, alongside the Year 6 teacher and SENCO from the feeder schools. The purpose is to share important information about each pupil.
For pupils identified as requiring additional support, 1:1 meetings with our SENCO and an extended transition period are offered.
Summer Half Term 2
Pupils joining Year 7 will be invited to attend Transition Days, which include a minimum of three days onsite at Wayland. These days provide opportunities to:
- Learn school routines and expectations.
- Meet their Form Group, Form Teacher, and key staff, including the Senior Leadership Team, Head of Year, Pastoral Team, and subject teachers.
- Experience classroom lessons, PE, and technology sessions for a holistic introduction to life at Wayland.
- Complete short assessments to help us understand reading and learning levels, ensuring pupils are placed in the correct classes for core subjects.
Additionally, pupils will receive guidance on mental health and resilience, led by MHST staff, and interact with our Junior Leadership Team, Prefects, and PALS, who offer peer-to-peer support throughout the year.
Year 7 Information Evening
Families will be invited to attend an Information Evening during the transition week. This event provides an opportunity to meet key staff, hear about life at Wayland, and discuss any questions or concerns.
