Our House System

Our House System

At Wayland Academy we are extremely proud of our House System and the values it promotes - we work hard for our futures, we are kind to ourselves, each other and our environment, and we work towards independence every day. Our Houses are named after historical figures that link to us locally, they are: Boudica, Carter, Chapman and Lincoln.

BOUDICA        Boudica House Logo Square

Boudica was a queen of the British Iceni tribe who led an uprising against the conquering forces of the Roman Empire in AD 60 or 61. The Iceni village is close to Watton.

CARTER        Carter House Logo Square

Howard Carter, British archaeologist, who made one of the richest and most-celebrated contributions to Egyptology: the discovery (1922) of the largely intact tomb of the King Tutankhamun. Howard Carter lived locally in Swaffham.

CHAPMAN     Chapman House Logo Square

Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman - know to all as Colin - built his first car in 1948 and went on to found the company Lotus. His impact and influence on automotive engineering and global motorsport lasts to this day.

LINCOLN       Lincoln House Logo Square

Samuel Lincoln, an apprentice weaver in Norwich, left the little Norfolk village of Hingham in 1637 to brave a voyage across the Atlantic. His great, great, great grandson Abraham would become on of the greatest figures in American History.

We operate a year-group based pastoral structure, with each year group led by a Head of Year and Assistant Head of Key Stage. The House System operates across all year groups as each House comprises a form group for Year 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11. This structure helps us to drive our school culture and encourages student development through access to a wide range of experiences and motivates students to work together and share ideas, allowing them to learn from each other.

When students join Wayland Academy, they will be allocated one of four Houses which students represent through participation in termly competitions and fundraising events. Students are awarded House Points for showing our values across all their activities in school and they are awarded badges for the different stages they reach.

Every staff member is also part of a House, and each House is led by a member of the Senior Leadership Team. To help reinforce the communities of each House, students attend a House Update Assembly each half term where everyone can reflect and celebrate the events they have been part of. House rivalry is also embedded into weekly Year Group Assemblies.
